- The Zapotec are an indigenous people located in Oaxaca, Mexico and in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
- The Zapotec's name for themselves Be’ena’a, or in English, "The People."
- Subsistence: Much of the Zapotec peoples are peasant farmers. The Zapotec's agricultural subsistence includes maize, beans, and squashes along with other crops depending on season, soil fertility, etc. Maize is sometimes sold as a cash crop; maguey is also a popular cash crop. In certain regions, there are different cash crops. For example, in mountainous regions coffee is a cash crop while in isthmus valley regions the cash crops are bananas, mangoes, and coconuts (Advameg, Inc. 2013).
