The Zapotec are an endogamous practicing group. This means that they do not marry outside of their culture, class, or social grouping. This is more of a long-established tradition than a command, and there are exceptions to this endogamous marriage practice. Since the Spaniards came over and brought their way of life to the Zapotec people, including their religion of Catholicism most Zapotec people are Catholic. Most follow the Catholic laws for marriage. They practice monogamy--having one husband/one wife. The zapotec peoples have two different kind of marriage: free union and church union. Like in the United States, some choose to not get formally married, yet they are monogamous to one person. It is the same with the Zapotec people. Some choose not to get married, and others choose to get married traditionally in a church. Divorce is frown upon, yet some Zapotec people separate and live separate lives.
FunFact ! -> The Zapotec peoples have different death ceremonies for the married and the unmarried people.
The kinship of the culture varies; it can run from either side of the family (mother or father).
